Craig and Karl's Project in Times Square, New York

Image
Elwin indicated that he would like to see some of my son's design work, so why not put it on the blog.   Illustration duo Craig & Karl were commissioned by Target to design a large scale mosaic mural at their Times Square NYC flagship store. The photos tell the story of their style.

Art on North Stradbroke Island

Image
Art on North Stradbroke Island While on a brief stay to North Stradbroke Island I managed to visit a couple of artistic displays in North Stradbroke. The island has a strong aboriginal history so there are many examples of indigenous art. 1. My highlight however was a visit to the gallery of Alan McKinnon. He has been on the island for 47 years. He arrived as a young surfer from West Australia who developed into a local artist. His art is all about the beach, the sand, the plants and animals. It is bright, colourful and detailed. Alan also had a unique sales idea. You could buy the original  artwork  for $1,200 or a limited copy for $350. Both are identical in size. 2. Next stop was to a craft shop called Starfish Studios. They sold the work of local painters, weavers etc. On duty was Koo. She had a number of small paintings say 100 X 150mm, mainly of foreshore/headland scenes priced to sell at $100. Her story was interesting. She had never done art but taught herself d...

Art Gallery Review - Gloucester

Image
The Gloucester Gallery has a rotating display of local artists throughout the year. The display upon my visit was entitled " Mixed Nuts". The work is by a group of artists from Wallamba near Gloucester. They formed in 2018 and the Artists of Wallamba now has over 70 members from the Wallamba Region of the Mid North Coast.  The group is diverse and includes many disciplines: painting, drawing, textile and fibre art, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, design and photography. With many on rural properties, there is often an environmental focus. There is always sharing of ideas, expertise and innovation at our meetings – along with good food and laughter! The title of our exhibition ‘Mixed Nuts’ evolved from one of these meetings and brings a selection of artwork showcasing 10 members of Artists of Wallamba. This a sample of their work. Australia's Ten Most Famous Artists

Image
As determined by  Sidney Nolan Nolan (1917-1992) grew up in rough-and-tumble Depression-era Melbourne and emerged as one of Australia’s most prolific and celebrated 20th-century artists. Nolan’s vibrant Modernist paintings focused on uniquely Australian stories from the bush – his depictions of Ned Kelly and his gang of bushrangers cemented both Kelly’s standing in Australian folklore and Nolan’s lofty status in the national art scene. Sidney Nolan - The Camp 1946 Grace Cossington Smith Grace Cossington Smith - The Sock Knitter Grace Cossington Smith (1892-1984) was a genuine trailblazer – her 1915 painting   The Sock Knitter   is considered Australia’s first Modernist work, leading the country’s response to European Post-Impressionism. Cossington Smith’s brilliantly colourful paintings focused on familiar surroundings: everyday Sydney during the 20th century, including many dazzling portrayals of domestic life.
