State Library of Victoria is an odd choice for an art review. They do have exhibitions which I largely ignored because the building was so magnificent. Judge for yourself the grandeur of the reading room. Click for their website to see more. State Library Victoria

Exhibition Review - I Have Never Seen Anything Like It - Yayoi Kusama

Image
The National Gallery of Victoria has an exhibit by Yayoi Kusama. Her range and quantity of works is amazing. 11/10. Yayoi Kusama is one of the world’s most celebrated living artists. Her polka-dotted pumpkin and flower sculptures are recognised globally, and her infinity mirror rooms are pivotal to the twenty-first century’s turn towards art as an immersive experience. Yayoi Kusama  explores Kusama’s unique worldview, starting with artwork created during her childhood and culminating with works made this year. In between, Kusama’s extraordinary career is surveyed, from her experimental years in postwar Japan to her contributions to New York’s avant-garde scene in the 1960s, through to her return to Japan in 1973 and subsequent re-emergence as an artist of international renown. Comprising close to 200 works, this is the largest exhibition of Kusama’s work presented in Australia and one of the most comprehensive retrospectives of the artist ever presented globally. Featuring pa...

You Had To See It To Believe It- Melbourne Central

Image
The Melbourne Central shopping precinct featured an installation by CRAIG&KARL As in Craig Redman my son. The area is a tall, glassed enclosure over a heritage shot tower. Within this space they created a floating cacophony of shapes and colours to express to joy of the Christmas holiday season. The objects are inflatables, suspended from the frame. It is very large, very impressive and very colourful. You have to see it to believe it. Too late though. It was meant to be taken down two weekends ago. There is talk that it might be reinstalled next Christmas, Some Idea of the Scale Exterior view of the glass tower.   Feel free to see more of the Craig&Karl story by clicking this link. Street Art Review - Melbourne Lanes

Image
Melbourne is famous for its lanes relating to both dining and graffiti art. Two well-known lanes are Hosier La and ACDC La. These are not far from Flinders St Station and Federation Square. Hosier Lane A short walk from Flinders Street station this is, by some way the most popular graffiti tourist spot in the city.  Hosier Lane  is a bit of a tourist magnet and the most famous graffiti laneway in Melbourne. This isn’t anything to do with the actual quality of the art though. Rather, this laneway is the closest one from the railway station. It’s just a short walk over and up along the road. Pop along here at most times of day and you’ll see crowds of selfie taking tourists and many an artist painting the walls with their Instagram handle on display. Certainly, if you want your art to be seen and photographed then this is the street to go to. ACDC Lane Walk to the top of Hosier Lane, turn right and a short walk around the corner along Flinders Lane is the entrance to the b...

Exhibition Review - The Lume

Image
A recent visit to Melbourne included a stop at the Lume, South Dock Area, which is part of the Convention Centre Area. The feature was and still is Vincent Van Gough. A very large space is filled with images of his work on the walls and floors for an immersive experience that was constantly changing. There was exotic music playing and background stories on large, suspended screens. People tended to hang around for hours. You could lounge on bean bags, enjoy the infinity room, a virtual reality room with goggles or just enjoy a coffee at the cafe (still within the exhibition space). There was even a learn to draw like Van Gough in 2 minutes studio for the kids. 10/10 Have a look on-line. https://www.thelumemelbourne.com/ Infinity Room Studio THE LUME
